Semen Analysis Q & A

What is a semen analysis?

A semen analysis is a procedure to identify abnormalities in sperm that can lead to infertility. This test analyzes the viability and overall health of a man’s sperm, including their shape, number, and movement.

In addition to pinpointing the possible cause of infertility, a semen analysis can also help determine if a vasectomy is successful.

How do I prepare for semen analysis?

To ensure your test results are as accurate as possible, Dr. Ramirez provides comprehensive guidance before your testing to help you prepare. This may include instructions not to use herbal medications or supplements, or ejaculate for 24-72 hours before your test, and to avoid alcohol and caffeine for up to five days.

Dr. Ramirez reviews all medications you are taking to determine if you need to make changes to your routine before semen analysis.

What happens during a semen analysis?

To analyze the health of sperm, the team at The Fertility & Gynecology Center - Monterey Bay IVF must collect a sample. The practice offers a private collection room at their in-house surgery center, or you can gather your sample at home through masturbation.

If you prefer to collect the sample on your own, you must keep it at near body temperature and bring it to the Monterey office within an hour for the most accurate results.

Dr. Ramirez reviews the specimen the same day instead of within a week, like many outside labs. He uses SQA Vision®, a state-of-the-art, computer-automated semen analyzer to evaluate the number of sperm you have and their overall viability.

What can I expect after a semen analysis?

Based on your test results, Dr. Ramirez can determine the best course of treatment for conceiving a pregnancy. If your results are outside a normal range, he may recommend additional testing to understand the sperm abnormalities better.

Dr. Ramirez offers a variety of fertility services to help you and your partner become pregnant, including intrauterine insemination and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

If you and your partner are experiencing issues with infertility, schedule a consultation with Dr. Ramirez to discuss a semen analysis. Call The Fertility & Gynecology Center - Monterey Bay IVF or book an appointment online today.
