IVF & Infertility Treatments
Infertility is quite often a treatable condition. Statistically, around fifteen percent of all couples are estimated to be infertile, but only up to two percent are completely sterile. The majority of these couples after seeking help can bear a child, either with or without medical assistance. Before any treatment is begun, the patient will meet one-on-one with Dr. Ramirez for an initial consultation. He will look at the medical histories of each partner, any previous and present medical conditions, medications, sexual histories, and reproductive experiences, among other factors. Afterwards, a recommendation will be made that may include different tests and examinations for both partners (see Infertility Evaluation). The recommended treatment path will depend on the patient’s age, diagnosis, the duration of infertility, any previous treatments and their personal preferences. In many, the cause of infertility is most often sperm problems, inadequate ovulation, and/or tubal blockage.
After a treatment plan is formed, the patient will meet with our financial counselor, Melissa Magno in order to discuss the costs as they pertain to each test and procedure. She will assist the patient in contacting their insurance providers and suggest financing options (see Financial Considerations). Next, the patient will meet with our Clinical Coordinator, Elvira Garcia, who will give prescriptions for a variety of tests, which may consist of blood tests, ultrasound, uterine imaging (hysterosalpingogram or HSG) and other exams if necessary. She will also schedule any necessary surgeries. These tests and surgeries are done to detect anything that might interfere with the success the couple would have in a reproductive cycle and what kind of treatment they need to pursue.
Doctor Ramirez will also tell you about ways to increase your chance of conceiving. This includes instructions about diet, nutritional supplements, exercise and weight loss, and sexual behavior as well as a recommendation to avoid tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, and certain medications.
You may be referred to a counselor who is specially trained to help you through the emotional upheaval that often accompanies a diagnosis of infertility as well as treatment. (see Coping With Infertility)
When these tests have been completed and the results examined, the patient or couple will meet with the physician and nurse. At this time, the details of the treatment plan will be explained and scheduled, and any questions and concerns you have will be addressed. You will be asked to sign all necessary consent forms.
